Recipe: Tropical Summer with Tropicana Slice Alphonso

While apparently roads are melting in India, and it’s getting increasingly hot, all one can do is gulp down something refreshing. Rich, cooling and refreshingly light, we combine Tropicana Slice Alphonso with pineapple juice in this simple mocktail by flair bartender Ami Behram Shroff. While most of the mango drinks I have tasted tend to get watery, the thick and juicy consistency of Tropicana Slice Alphonso makes it ideal for summer drinks. Tropical Summer

Ingredients

·        Tropicana Slice Alphonso

·        Pineapple juice

·        2-3 tulsi leaves

Method

·        Combine half a glass of S and half a glass of pineapple juice to create a mocktail mixture.

·        Take the tulsi leave and muddle them using mortar and pestle.

·        Put the muddle in the mocktail mixture.

·        Shake it well, like cold coffee.

·        Garnish it with some basil leaves

Andhra food in Mumbai

It is so heartening to see luxury establishments going back to our roots to bring out regional cuisines which define India. JW Marriott Mumbai Juhu recently hosted the Andhra food festival, to break the myth, especially for a north Indian like me, whose exposure to South Indian food is restricted stereotypically to Idlis and Dosas.

Moreover, my knowledge of the state and the food came from a pilgrim visit to Tirupati 10 years back, when, neither did I understand the food, nor the language.

High on the spice scale, Andhra food has a very tangy play of flavours and very interesting non vegetarian content. Hosted by Chef Naidu from Hyderabad Marriott Hotel & Convention Centre, we tried two set menus—vegetarian and non vegetarian—which included starters like Masala gaare, Kodi Vepudu (Wok-tossed spicy chicken) and Aratipandu Uttappam. Something the vegetarian me loved was the tangy tamarind rice and the Mullakada Ullipayalu Sambar.

Other Andhra specialties included Palak Mokka-Jonna masala (tempered spinach and corn), Dabbalam (traditional red pumpkin stew), Mamsam Pulusu (lamb cooked in broth), Muvva Vankaya (stuffed brinjal with tangy spices) and Andhra Vegetable Kurma. For seafood lovers there was Royyala Iguru (roasted andra prawns “coastal style”), Neerulli Lobster (simmered in tangy masala) and Nepore Chapala Pulusu (authentic nellore style fish curry).

The dinner concluded with Payasam and the forgotten treasure—double ka meetha, a royal sweet, traditionally served at Hyderabadi weddings. A culinary expedition of a culture indeed!

 While Mumbai has no dearth of home bakers and ‘cake shops’, each better than the previous one, this review post is so bring out another newly opened bakery we recently reviewed. With 5 outlets in Andheri, Malad and Juhu, Cakebred is a seven month old bakery which delivers gourmet cakes and pastries in Mumbai at affordable prices. They put together an assortment of some of their signature desserts for us, which I made eight people try, to get a fair and unanimous verdict.

What we tried- Florida Fruit, Caramel Cracker, Double Decker 

Dark chocolate and blueberry muffin and multi-flavoured macarons.  

What’s awesome- Cakebred is excellent for people who are looking for customiseddesigner cakes and fresh gourmet breads in Mumbai. Especially for freshly baked products which not too high on sugar content and priced so economically, the bakery is technically a steal! Plus, they deliver without any extra charges!

Lutyens Cocktail House is another feather in Mr Priyank Sukhija's cap. This newly launched restaurant in Delhi is located in the heart of the capital and is designed by British architect Edwin Landseer Lutyens. 

Taking cue from colonial architecture and designs which dominated the times of the Raj, the restaurant walls are filled with architectural maps of Viceroy House a.k.a. Presidential Residence and other old buildings from the same era.

What we reviewed – When an entrepreneur like Mr. Sukhija (Fork You fame) opens a new hangout, the expectations are always high. The ambiance was nicely curated and the servers were possessed a good knowledge of the menu and helped us with some excellent suggestions. The smoked mocktails caught our attention and lived up to their literal description. Food quality and portions were generous. Of course, you can expect to dine with Delhi’s elite owing to the restaurant’s prime location.

P.S. If you are pure vegetarian on certain days because of your ethical values, tell you server in advance because in some dishes the chef may use egg whites for binding.
